Grimaud, a Medieval Town in the Var

Between Saint-Tropez and Sainte-Maxime lies Grimaud, a medieval town in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. The name of this village comes from a lord, Gibelin de Grimaldi, who received the land in exchange for his help in expelling the Saracens.

Grimaud has retained the charm of its medieval origins: cobbled streets, ramparts, ruins of a castle, Romanesque church, and more. But the best way to appreciate this medieval village is to explore it for yourself during your holiday at our campsite!

Grimaud, the “Venice of the South of France”

Grimaud is a waterfront town in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, famous for its gorgeous harbour. With its bridges, vaulted galleries, canals and quays, Grimaud bears a striking resemblance to beautiful Venice.

Originally, this village on the French Riviera was set on marshland. Villagers farmed the land and hunted. In the 1960s, the architect François Spoerry decided to transform it into a beautiful and modern waterfront town, ideal for attracting tourists and sailors. Many ocean lovers have bought houses and docks for their boats.

Unlike many of his colleagues at the time, François Spoerry was not a fan of large contemporary buildings, preferring to preserve Provençal architecture and the Mediterranean influence. He built a village with a port, where land and sea intertwine, in a picturesque setting with a Provençal feel.

Today, Grimaud boasts no less than 7km of canals, 12km of quays and 2,000moorings for boats.
Tourists love to stroll along the quays and bridges and dine in one of the restaurants with a splendid view of the port. And, of course, you can hire a boat for an enchanting trip along the canals.
