A pitch with private sanitary facilities is a camping pitch equipped with its own bathroom – shower, washbasin, WC – reserved for its occupants alone, from the first day of the stay to the last. Esterel Caravaning introduced the concept to France when the domain opened on 14 July 1976 in Agay – Saint-Raphaël. Fifty years on, it is still the service our caravanners and motorhome travellers love most.

So why does this discreet little building at the edge of the pitch change the entire camping experience, to the point where we call it the ultimate luxury in outdoor hospitality? The answer in four points, and fifty years of history.

A pitch with private sanitary facilities: what is it exactly?

It is a pitch for a tent, caravan or motorhome that comes with its own individual washroom on the pitch itself: shower, washbasin, WC and hairdryer, lockable, and used by no one else for the whole of your stay. Depending on the category, it may add a kitchenette with fridge, a dishwasher, a plancha grill, right up to a private spa on the most exclusive pitches.

Nothing to share, nothing to queue for, nothing to carry: the bathroom is yours. And as on every pitch across the domain, running water, electricity, mains drainage and free unlimited Wi-Fi are included.

Why is it the ultimate luxury in camping?

Because true luxury, on holiday, is not measured in equipment alone: it is measured in privacy and in time regained. No more toilet bag at first light, no more showering in flip-flops, no more waiting at the washbasins. You live at your own pace, just as you do at home, with the view of the Esterel massif thrown in.

A pitch with private facilities is hotel-room comfort applied to the open air: the space of a garden, the freedom of a caravan or motorhome, and a bathroom of which you are the sole user, a hygiene advantage nothing else can match. It is this rare combination that makes private luxury camping far more than a slogan: it is another way to camp.

Privacy matters outdoors too: our pitches are bordered by hedges. The seventeen Luxe pitches, for example, are enclosed by a palm hedge that shields each one from view.

An idea born in 1976… fifty years ahead of its time

When Esterel Caravaning opened on 14 July 1976, founder Jean Laroche wanted every pitch to have its own sanitary facilities. The idea was so far ahead of its time that the authorities approved only eighteen: the first eighteen camping pitches with individual sanitary facilities in France.

The domain has never stopped deepening that intuition: in 1999 it installed the first private jacuzzis on motorhome pitches, a world first, then in 2010 created France’s first pitches with a private spa, the Palace de Luxe and Royal Maxi. Today, around a third of the domain’s pitches have private sanitary facilities, and the concept has established itself throughout high-end outdoor hospitality.

In 2026, the year of our fiftieth anniversary, that “mad” idea of 1976 has become one of the hallmarks of 5-star camping, a classification the domain has held since 2011, as the first campsite in the Var to earn it.

Which pitches with private sanitary facilities at Esterel Caravaning?

The domain offers seven categories of pitches with a private shower room, bathroom or spa, for caravans, motorhomes and tents. Three levels of comfort stand out:

• The private shower room: the Luxe pitch, with shower, washbasin, WC, hairdryer and dishwasher, in the heart of the domain, behind its palm hedge.
• The private bathroom with kitchenette: the Prestige and DeLuxe Prestige pitches, your own bathroom, plus a kitchen corner with fridge and, on the Prestige, a plancha grill for dinners on the terrace.
• The private spa: the Prestige Spa, Royal Maxi, Palace de Luxe and Impérial pitches. At the top of the range, your own spa on the pitch, combined depending on the category with a private shower room and a kitchenette. Camping, private-suite edition.

The categories with private sanitary facilities are among the first to sell out every year. Make a firm booking and pay for your stay before 31 December, and the booking fee on your pitch is waived for the 2027 season.

Just between us: the day the authorities said no

My father wanted every pitch to have its own sanitary facilities. In 1976, the idea was so far ahead of its time that the authorities approved only eighteen. Eighteen! He was furious.

Today, those private facilities are one of the services you love most, and the concept has travelled right across outdoor hospitality. My father wasn’t mad. He was simply fifty years ahead of his time.
