Salernes

At only 60 kilometres from Esterel Caravaning the very famous village of Salernes awaits you. Salernes was first of all known as the shop counter for salt on the route of the seasonal migration. It’s also known “since the 18th century” for its specialists in the fabrication of ceramics.

With the decline in sales of earthenware after the French revolution the producers had to find other ways to exploit the richness of their soil, they then started producing terra cotta products mainly tiles. Rapidly their tiles for flooring became renowned throughout the world assuring again the prosperity of the village, up until recently when new modern flooring took its place. Now the picturesque village has a mixture between arts, crafts and industry, the traces of the past continue to cross paths with traditions and modern successes.
